May 14th, 2014- Edmonton Valley Zoo

How did I not know that Edmonton had a zoo until 2 weeks into my trip? Am I a huge animal lover, yes. Do I think it’s cruel to have them locked up, no. I think zoos are a great learning tool for not only children, but adults too. Where else would you be able to get up close and personal with elephants, zebras, lions and tigers, besides in the wild? From what I’ve seen at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, the staff treat the animals like part of the family, they all seemed loved and well cared for, and super happy. On top of all that, they’re safe. The zoo features over 350 animals from all different climates and habitats for you to discover, learn about and appreciate. I got to meet Lucy, the 37-year-old Asian elephant, who to me still looks like a little baby, and feel in love immediately. We followed her around the park on one of her daily walks and watched as she stuck her little (okay not so little) head into the ice cream truck waiting for a treat. I guess she used to get ice cream treats on her walks, but now she has a small cavity and can no longer have ice cream. Poor little thing, she just stood there waiting for it, my heart broke.
