How To Style An Oversized Coat

Pink Ever New Coat

During the cold, chilly months, nothing beats cozy sweaters and thick, snuggly jackets. Nothing looks warmer or trendier than an oversized coat. I received this pale pink Ever New one for Christmas, and totally forgot about it, until today. When I first opened it on Christmas morning, I thought, will this oversize coat work on my smaller frame? I’m surprised Derek picked it up, as he tends to like form-fitting pieces on me. Surprisingly, whether you have an apple, pear, rectangle, curvy or petite body type, an oversized coat can work extremely well. There are plenty of ways to wear this trend without looking like a bag lady.

For a high-fashion look, opt for a colour or printed jacket. Whether leather, wool, fur or cotton, a sure way to achieve that perfect street-style look is to get an oversized coat in a bold colour or pattern. Another important thing to keep in mind is, proportions. It’s all about balance when styling this type of jacket. Since the jacket has so much bulk and weight to it, you’re going to want to pair it with form-fitting pieces.

Just because it’s intended to be worn oversize, doesn’t mean you should go up a few sizes. Remember that the coat shouldn’t fall more than a few inches below your actual shoulder, and the sleeves shouldn’t be any longer than your hands. As for the length of the coat, this is totally up to you. If you have some extra height, don’t be afraid to go ankle-length, if you’re slightly short, you might want to keep it around the knees.

This pastel pink adds a touch of femininity to an otherwise masculine jacket. Although it’s voluminous and oversize, it lends a sense of modernity to this winter trend we’ve been seeing for awhile. It’s romantic, oh-so girly and yet gives a real sporty, laid-back vibe. Rocking pastels in the winter is a glorious way to have fun with colour. I made sure to keep my silhouette sleek and tailored and let the jacket make the statement.
